North-Gondwana – Laurussia dynamic paleogeography challenged by magnetic susceptibility through the Famennian

چکیده

Large-scale magnetic susceptibility (MS) variations in ancient sediments are usually interpreted as related to sea-level and climate changes affecting the erosional regime amount of detrital input. To constrain such environmental during Famennian, we compared MS records representative sections pelagic limestones (1) Avalonian margin Laurussia [Sessacker (SES) Beringhauser Tunnel (BHT), Rhenish Slate Mountains, Germany] (2) Gondwana terranes [Erfoud (ERF), Tafilalt, Morocco; Col des Tribes (CT), Montagne Noire, France; Buschteich (BU), Thuringia, Germany; Corona Mizziu (CM I, II), Sardinia Pizzul West (PZW) Carnic Alps, Italy]. Very low values throughout Famennian characterize from Avalonia. In contrast, high oscillating early Famennian; they drop significantly all together middle Palmatolepis marginifera Zone match pattern thereafter. evaluate importance partial diagenetic overprint, data were hysteresis parameters geochemical proxies BU, CM II CT. The degree thermal diagenesis is estimates taking into account Color Alteration Indices (CAI) conodonts. Striking dissimilarities between favor for an existing remnant oceanic barrier these continents times, when supplies was obviously different. Uniformity reached after N-Gondwana, barriers could have vanished T-R fluctuations sea-level. All sites remained under a rather similar supply through uppermost Famennian. Comparison trends with conodont biofacies five (CT, SES) allows emphasizing concordance their relationship sea level fluctuations.

The earliest record of terrestrial animals in Gondwana: A scorpion from the Famennian (Late Devonian) Witpoort Formation of South Africa

The new genus and species, Gondwanascorpio emzantsiensis, are described in Scorpiones incertae se dis on the basis of fragments from the Famennian (Late Devonian) Waterloo Farm locality near Grahams town, Eastern Cape, South Africa. This finding adds to the sparse record of Late Devonian scorpion taxa and provides the first evidence of Palaeozoic scorpions from Gondwana. Material includes a com...

Giant magnetic susceptibility of gold nanorods detected by magnetic alignment.

We have determined the magnetic properties of single-crystalline Au nanorods in solution using an optically detected magnetic alignment technique. The rods exhibit a large anisotropy in the magnetic volume susceptibility (Δχ(V)). Δχ(V) increases with decreasing rod size and increasing aspect ratio and corresponds to an average volume susceptibility (χ(V)), which is drastically enhanced relative...

A Gigantic Sarcopterygian (Tetrapodomorph Lobe-Finned Fish) from the Upper Devonian of Gondwana (Eden, New South Wales, Australia)

Edenopteron keithcrooki gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Famennian Worange Point Formation; the holotype is amongst the largest tristichopterids and sarcopterygians documented by semi-articulated remains from the Devonian Period. The new taxon has dentary fangs and premaxillary tusks, features assumed to be derived for large Northern Hemisphere tristichopterids (Eusthenodon, Hyneria, Lang...

Brown tumor of the mandible: Magnetic susceptibility demonstrated by MRI

We present a case of a 75-year-old woman with right mandible cystic lesion and primary hyperparathyroidism. The MRI demonstrated marked loss of signal intensity on T2 gradient-echo images, suggesting intralesional hemossiderin. After an open biopsy, histology was consistent with "brown tumor." The finding of susceptibility on T2 gradient-echo images in a mandible lesion adds considerable specif...
